How to Create a Loose Side Braid in Under 2 Minutes

3/20/2011

A loose casual hairstyle can look great, but so many women have trouble making their hair look effortless. The loose side braid stays cool, stays fun and will not fall apart. You can create this lived in look on dry or wet hair, but dry hair works best. This is such an easy look, if you don’t have a lot of time to style your hair and want to look great

Instructions

Things you'll want to grab:
  • Texturizer spray
  • Comb
  • Ponytail holder
  • Headband
  • Bobby pins
  • Shine spray or serum
1.    Spray the hair with a texturizer spray. The texturizer will help hold the braid in place and give natural wave to the hair that is loose.

2.    Comb the product through the hair gently.

3.     Pull any bangs or face framing pieces of hair to the front with the comb, and part that hair to the side. The front face-framing sections should not be wider than 3 inches. Or it will just look like those sections have fallen out.

4.     Toss the hair onto one side and separate into three sections. Braid, crossing each outside piece alternately over the middle piece and under to the other side, from the nape of the neck to the ends. If you want a looser finish, make sure to overlap the hair sections gently without much tension.

5.     Secure the ends with a ponytail holder. Don't worry about securing the base too tightly; the braid will not come as loose because of the texturizer spray. Once you secure the bottom you can gently pull the braid with your fingers wherever you’d like to create a looser finish. Sometimes this looks more bohemian and softer than a tight braid.

6.     Place a headband on the hair just behind the face-framing pieces or bangs for a nice finish. If the bangs get mussed while doing this, just finger-comb them back into place.

7.     Use bobby pins to pin down any loose hair on the opposite side of the ponytail. Pin the pieces to the nape to keep them out of the way. Don't pin too many pieces since the look must remain somewhat loose and casual.

8.     Now use a small amount of shine spray on the braid starting far away from the ends upwards.  Or use a small amount of serum heated in the palms of your hands on the ends to create a smoother look instead.

"As Heather had done my hair and make up for a friend's wedding several years before, I decided what to do with my hair at the last minute and Heather was able to create a look that was perfect for me! It suited the style of my dress, the hair accessory and my personality. I could not have imagined it turning out better and I'm so happy with her work. Thanks so much for your talents and great service Heather!"
